On any given afternoon a betting screen shows meetings from several states at once, all of them labelled in somebody else's time. Reading that list from Perth is a skill of its own, and it is where most Western Australian racing mistakes begin.

One screen, several time zones

A national race-day list is not a timetable, it is several timetables printed side by side. Meetings in the eastern states, in South Australia and in this state all appear together, and the jump times shown may be in the zone of the meeting, the zone of the operator or the zone of your device, depending on the page. Western Australia is two hours behind the eastern states for part of the year and three hours behind for the rest, and South Australia sits in between. The first act of any racing afternoon here is therefore boring and essential: establish which zone the page is showing and convert everything you care about into AWST once.

Find the zone label

Check whether the list says AWST, AEST or AEDT, or says nothing at all. A page that does not label its times is the one most likely to cost you a race.

Convert the day, not the race

Write out the meetings you intend to follow in local time before the first jump, rather than doing the arithmetic again under pressure between races.

Two hours or three

The eastern clocks move for part of the year and this state's do not. Confirm the current difference instead of reusing a remembered figure.

The codes do not share a calendar

Thoroughbreds, harness and greyhounds run on different nights and different cycles, and in this state they also sit inside a racing year that runs opposite the eastern one: Western Australia's busy season falls when the eastern carnival is quiet, and the reverse. A punter who follows one code closely and the other two casually will still see all three on the same screen, priced the same way and closing minutes apart. That is the trap. Each code has its own form conventions, its own field sizes and its own reasons a runner is scratched, and a habit carried from one of them into another is a habit applied to the wrong sport.

What a price commits you to

There are two ways a racing price is set and they oblige you differently. A fixed price is agreed when you confirm the bet, so what you see is what you are paid regardless of what happens to the market afterwards. A totalisator price is a share of a pool and is not known until that pool closes, so the figure shown while betting is an estimate. Neither is better; they are different products. The error worth avoiding is comparing a fixed price against an indicative tote figure as though the two were the same number, then concluding one operator is more generous than another. They are not comparable until the pool has closed.

  • Decide fixed or tote before you look at the figures, not after.
  • Treat an indicative tote figure as an estimate and nothing more.
  • When comparing operators, compare fixed against fixed and nothing else.
  • Check the operator's rule for a scratched runner under each pricing type.
  • Note the close time for the specific race, which is not always the jump time.

Multi-leg bets and the arithmetic of losing

Multi-leg racing bets attach several races to one stake, and the appeal is obvious: a modest outlay against a large return. The arithmetic of the other side is less discussed. Every leg added multiplies the number of ways the bet fails, and a single scratching can change the whole structure depending on the operator's substitution rule. None of that makes multi-leg betting unreasonable, but it does mean the bet should be understood as a lottery ticket on a sequence rather than as an opinion about a race. The relevant question is not whether the return is attractive. It is how many separate things have to go right.

  1. Count the legs and accept that each one multiplies the ways to lose.
  2. Read the rule for a scratched runner in a multi-leg bet before you place it.
  3. Keep the stake at a level you would accept losing outright, because that is the usual outcome.
  4. Do not add a leg to raise the return on a bet you have already decided.
  5. Convert every leg's close time into AWST, since the legs may sit in different states.

The rules that apply to you, and the ones that do not

Racing betting with a bookmaker licensed in an Australian state or territory is lawful, and that licence is what gives a dispute a destination. Gambling inside this state is regulated by the Gaming and Wagering Commission of Western Australia, the body behind the rule that keeps gaming machines at Crown Perth and out of every other venue in Western Australia. Nothing about that remit extends to an offshore online casino. No online casino holds an Australian licence, the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 prohibits offering those games to Australians without making play an offence, and BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, covers licensed Australian online wagering rather than casinos.

  • Confirm which Australian state or territory licensed the bookmaker you are using.
  • Use the operator's own complaint process first, in writing, and keep the reference.
  • Escalate to the regulator that issued that licence if the process does not resolve it.
  • Expect no Australian regulator to act on a dispute with an offshore online casino.
  • Register with BetStop if you want self-exclusion applied across licensed Australian online wagering.

A full card is a full day

Meetings in four states can keep a screen busy from morning until late. Set the figure for the day on the account before the first jump and let it close the day for you.
